Brightline West briefs the SBCTA board

Brightline West representatives briefed the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority board on construction, project development and the company's pursuit of federal loan financing. SBCTA says board members were particularly interested in High Desert commuters: lining up train schedules with morning and evening commutes, and fares that complement Metrolink.

Quick answers

Can I ride a train from Los Angeles to Las Vegas today?
No. Brightline West is under development and not in service. Amtrak’s Desert Wind, which linked Los Angeles and Las Vegas, was discontinued in May 1997 (see our rail history).
When will Brightline West open?
The company’s current target is late 2029, according to a spokesperson quoted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Sept 28, 2026. The earlier goal was service before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Where will the trains go?
From a Las Vegas station on Las Vegas Boulevard (between Blue Diamond and Warm Springs roads) to Rancho Cucamonga, with stations in Apple Valley (Victor Valley) and Hesperia. At Rancho Cucamonga, riders can connect to Metrolink for downtown Los Angeles.
How is it being paid for?
So far: a $3 billion federal grant plus $2.5 billion of private activity bonds, and the company is still awaiting a decision on a $6 billion federal RRIF loan (Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sep 28, 2026). Under its bond indentures it must receive at least $400 million of equity by Nov 2, 2026. The deadline is in the Fifth Supplemental Indentures filed on EMMA (Sep 9, 2026), and the $400 million amount in the company’s Nov 21, 2025 EMMA notice; The Bond Buyer reported the extension on Sep 11, 2026.
